Sue’s bio
Head of Prayer Ministry
Hometown: I was born in Pennington Gap, VA and grew up in Hampton, VA and Mathews County, VA. We’ve lived in Roanoke since 1976 so it’s home now.
Family: Mark and I were married in August of 1976. We met while students at VA Tech. We have one son (Aaron), two daughters (Rachel and Elizabeth), one daughter-in-law (Jill), and one son-in-law (Sammy). They have blessed us with five granddaughters and four grandsons.
Education: I graduated from Mathews High school and have a BS from VA Tech and MS from Radford University
Background: I grew up in the Disciples of Christ church, but didn’t come to know Jesus until I was in college. We have served in three churches in the Roanoke Valley and have been at OHC since 2010. Before I retired, I worked in Roanoke County Schools as a special education teacher and at Anthem as an information technology resource manager.
My Passion at Orchard Hills: I love our prayer ministry! It is so cool to watch God work in people’s lives to heal hurts and change hearts.
Something not many people would know about me: I cry a lot during corporate worship. Just to be able worship him and be among Jesus followers expressing their love for him touches my heart so much that it leaks out of my eyes!
Favorite Illustration of Biblical Truth: I love the story of the woman at the well. The Samaritan woman’s encounter with Jesus reminds me so much of my encounter with him. Like her, I wasn’t looking for a savior and I certainly wasn’t living a life that any “religious people” would deem worthy of Jesus going out of his way for. Yet he showed up, seemingly out of the blue and called me to him. He saved me and filled me with his Holy Spirit, his living water. And he continues to pour his life into me daily as I surrender my heart to him. Like the woman at the well, my life was never the same after meeting Jesus!
